Mori means 'forest' in Japanese, so the subculture is known as a girl, who lives in a fairy tale forest. It originated in a mixi community from a girl named Choco after describing her outfit as 'a girl who came out the forest'. Yes, even from willowy pretty white girls in floaty dresses. Origin Mori kei (some people call it mori girl, ) is a fairly new Japanese fashion that started in 2007. And maybe there’s a person, just like me back than, who feels underrepresented. Search for “mori girl” (because it’s the original term and more often used than the gender-neutral Mori kei) on tumblr, or even on Google, and you’ll still have the same skinny, ethereal girls in floaty dresses I saw three years ago.

There are more examples, more forms, figures, skin tones, genders, hair styles, styles in Mori kei, even. I’m okay with my body and I know I look good in Mori. Where are the dark-skinned people, the marshmallow girls (I love that term, it sounds so nice and warm and fluffy and lovely), the power grrrls, oh, and where are the boys, or any other gender besides female? Is being a demure, thin, pale girl all that there is to being Mori? Is it not okay to differ from the ideal?īy now, more than three years after the post that sparked Natalie’s post in return, I’m not anxious anymore. I just wondered why all the Mori pictures I ever saw featured a certain stereotype. But most of the time, I can deal with that. Not always, not everyday, but everyone has these days when they don’t like everything about themselves.

My figure is that of a Renoir or Mucha model, not a Warhol one. I do have a belly that’s visible, but actually, I don’t care that much, I actually like it. I’ve got a rugby girl silhouette, not a ballet girl one. I’m quite muscular, but I’m short and broad-hipped, so it doesn’t show. I’ve got an E to F bust, and it runs in the family. It still distresses me that they tried, because not everyone has enough self-esteem and body consciousness to disbelieve. I wanted everything, from body shapes and skin colours to hair cuts and colour schemes.īelieve me, there have been people trying to make me believe this, and trying to make me believe it makes me somehow less worth than others. When I wrote the words Natalie quoted on her blog I merely wanted more examples of Mori Girls that weren’t model-like girls with androgynous bodies, of white, perfect skin and wide eyes, long legs and pretty hair. Because it’s that headline that I always see in the referring links, and it’s the headline that bugs me. This is about the title of the post mostly, not the content (which is about the same as in this post, actually). While this might not have been Natalie’s intention and she merely (mis-)interpreted something I wrote back in 2011 I thought I might as well write down my thoughts about that. I think that Mori Kei is a style that would be nice to use in my project, although I don’t think I would use every aspect of it, I think that the contrast between the light colours to the earthy tones is lovely against the mixture of materials, and the natural makeup with the fantasy feel brings the whole look together and would make any style stand out.One of the links that refer to my blog most often is one from Vanillery Garden, from a blog post titled “ Am I too fat? Weight Issues In The Mori Girl World“. I also love the vintage look to it, that makes it look like a illustration from an old book. It is something that reminds me of nature and also has a sort of deer appearance to it and I feel that this would be a good idea for my project to keep within my spring theme. The colour palette to go with this is one of my favorite aspects of it, I love the natural earthy tones against the pale colours.

When I look at this style it reminds me of a cold winters day in the forest, it is a style that looks very much like a Disney movie such as Snow white or Beauty and the Beast. Their hair and make up is also very natural and simple, to help with that perfect natural beauty look to go with their fantasy style. Mori girls dress in a style that makes them look as if they have just walked out of a book, although they do not where large dresses and tiaras, their look suggest they are the people what live in the little villages and live a comfortable and cozy life style, wearing layered clothes and warm knits. *Although I am no expert on any of these styles I know a brief bit about them and will make sure to link accounts that will help if anyone is interested in these styles.

I have done some research on a few different Japanese styles that have moved on into the western world and Mori Kei was one of the styles that stood out to me. Mori Kei comes in all different genres and has no rules or guidelines, it is a fashion style that is suited for all and is cute but also practical.

What is Mori Kei? Mori Kei in Japanese means Forest (Mori 森) Style (Kei).
